How to Keep Glass Shower Doors Spotless in Durham Region’s Hard Water

Durham Region water carries a fair amount of calcium and magnesium. Every time it dries on your shower glass, it leaves mineral deposits behind. Left alone for months, those deposits etch into the surface and no cleaner will fully remove them.

The habit that matters most: squeegee the glass after every shower. Thirty seconds, top to bottom. This single step prevents more damage than any product you can buy.

Weekly clean: mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the glass, let it sit five minutes, then wipe with a microfibre cloth and rinse. For stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda and a little vinegar and work it gently over the area.

What to avoid:

  • Abrasive pads or powders — they scratch glass permanently
  • Ammonia-based or bleach cleaners near hardware — they pit chrome and brushed nickel finishes
  • Letting vinegar sit on natural stone thresholds, which it can dull

Don’t forget the hardware. Wipe hinges and clamps dry, and check the seals and sweeps once a season. A cracked vinyl sweep lets water onto your floor long before you notice a problem, and replacement strips are inexpensive.

If the glass already looks permanently cloudy, professional restoration polishing can sometimes recover it. When etching has gone too deep, replacing the panel is the honest answer — and we’ll tell you which situation you’re in.
