5 Signs Your Commercial Storefront Glass Needs Attention

Storefront glass is the first thing a customer sees and the last thing most business owners think about. Here’s what to watch for before a small issue becomes a closed-door day.

1. Fog or moisture between the panes. Sealed units trap insulating gas between two sheets of glass. Once the seal fails, moisture gets in and the unit turns hazy. It won’t clear up and the insulating value is gone — the glass unit needs replacing, though the frame usually stays.

2. Doors that stick, drag or don’t latch. Usually a worn pivot, a failing closer, or a threshold that’s shifted. Staff start slamming the door to make it catch, which accelerates the damage and becomes an accessibility problem for customers.

3. Chips or nicks near the glass edge. Edge damage on tempered glass is more serious than a scratch in the middle. Stress concentrates at the edges, and a chipped panel can fail suddenly with a temperature swing.

4. Gaps, drafts or daylight around the frame. Loose stops and dried-out sealant let air and water in. You feel it in the heating bill first, and see it in water-damaged flooring later.

5. A closer that slams or won’t hold. Door closers are adjustable and rebuildable. Fixing one is far cheaper than replacing the glass it eventually breaks.
